Dear Mr. Gebhardt, you have been using the HALM glass HALM glass straws since May 2018. What made you decide to switch to reusable drinking straws back then??

Peter Gebhardt (Mercure Hotel):

First and foremost, we were concerned with sustainability, as the Mercure brand stands for regional manufacturers. Disposable was out of the question from an ecological point of view alone, as straws made of natural fiberfaAlthough they can be recycled, they still produce waste and repeatedly release emissions in production. The second step was to increase quality through the use of reusable drinking straws. In the aftermath, there was also the aspect that it is also more economical than working with disposable straws.

Why did you then choose drinking straws made of glass and not made of a different material?

Peter Gebhardt (Mercure Hotel):

There weren't many alternatives back then. The product HALM was one of the first products that was ever available. It was important for me to switch as quickly as possible. Because every week that we switch earlier, we can avoid garbage. Back then there was only the alternative of metal or glass, and we opted for glass because its quality is simply better. The mouthfeel when drinking is a lot more pleasant with glass straws than with metal straws.

Are you still satisfied with your decision today?

Peter Gebhardt (Mercure Hotel):

Yes, in any case. I had made a calculation in advance with a shrinkage rate (breakage and unnatural shrinkage / theft) of 5 percent, as there were no guidelines at the time. In the first year (2018), the shrinkage was only 2 percent - even less than expected. Thus, the acquisition costs already amortized in November 2018, instead of as previously calculated in May 2019. Of course, it should also be noted that the loss in the first few months is always somewhat greater: It is a new product and the employees and guests have to first learn to deal with it.

We are of course very pleased that HALM not only creates an advantage for the environment, but also economically for you.

Exactly, that's right! We were also able to reduce the unnatural loss due to theft later, as we also sell our branded straws here in the house as give-away for the guest. The guests will be informed of this in advance. Since we sell them very cheaply, the guests think twice about whether they should take their stalks or get their own gift set.

The gift set is very well received because the guests are convinced of the quality of the straws. In fact, we have received a lot of positive feedback about the quality of the HALM glass HALM glass straws and thus also about the quality of the drinks. The guests are consistently enthusiastic: mouthfeel, feel, taste of the drinks.

Train your staff in any way on how to deal with HALM . If so, how exactly does it HALM??

Peter Gebhardt (Mercure Hotel):

The training of the employees is of course the be-all and end-all. straight since we work with some milk and cream cocktails at the bar. The issue here is that you should soak the stalks so that the coconut flakes do not dry out in the HALM . You can counteract this very easily by soaking the straws in a bucket of water, just like with cutlery. Then simply let yourself be cleaned in the glass washer. Of course, they also have to be washed upright in the cutlery basket. And if you still have stubborn deposits, there is always the dish brush.

The most important thing about the glass straws is to let the guests participate in the ideological idea and to share the idea behind it. That is half of the success, because the guests actually thank you for it. You can tell in the guest comments, it works really well. I would also recommend the idea of HALM as a gift set, as it has extremely depressed our loss.
